I'm Ashley
Welcome to my digital home, where I share strategies and candid advice on creating learner-centered, technology-enhanced learning environments that are inclusive and beneficial for everyone.

My primary goal for this site is to equip educators with clear, concise information about the challenges and opportunities of teaching and learning in virtual environments, helping them refine and improve their design practices.
My Story
My journey in education began in 2009 when I ventured abroad to teach English as a foreign language after graduating from university.

From a young age, I've been captivated by the way people learn, particularly how they acquire new languages. Although I don't come from a multilingual home and I’m not fluent in a second language, I have always seen language as a gateway into the hearts and minds of those who speak them.

When I was nine, I ambitiously tried to teach myself German and Mandarin over summer break using audiobooks from the local library. While my attempt wasn’t very successful, it sparked a lifelong passion for culture and language. This passion led me on an incredible eleven-year adventure across Asia, Europe, and Latin America. To date, I’ve traveled to over forty countries and had the great honor of calling several of them home, including South Korea, India, the UK, and Guatemala.

Upon my return to Canada in late 2018, I took some time off to start a family and reacquaint myself with my new yet familiar surroundings. In 2021, I enrolled in the Master of Arts in Learning and Technology (MALAT) program at Royal Roads University. Over the two-year program, I developed a unique blend of interests and research experience in language acquisition, inclusive design practices, and constructivist-based teaching and learning strategies. These are the topics I’ll be writing about here. For more information on constructivist teaching and learning, see Gray, A. 1997.
